As a result, one in four adult men and one in three adult women are reported to be obese. Students explored the “vicious cycle of poverty and health” by learning from local experts tackling these issues. They also visited rural communities and universities, conducting surveys to better understand local challenges and contribute to solutions.09Service learning themes in each countryIndia has achieved remarkable economic growth as an IT superpower. While there are many shopping malls in the cities, it is estimated that about 10% of the population lives below the international poverty line of US$1.9 per day. Through visits to slums where the lowest caste people live and to an afterschool program provided by the NPO, students consider the importance of education in helping escape poverty.Students visited informal schools serving stateless children —often referred to as “invisible people”—as well as facilities providing high-quality education to refugees and stateless youth. They engaged with Japanese individuals working locally, learning about building cross-cultural communities, fostering collaboration, and addressing challenges and aspirations. Additionally, students conducted street research to gauge public awareness of statelessness, deepening their understanding of this critical issue.Bali, Indonesia, is renowned as a captivating destination for mystical cultural experiences. Yet, just beyond the resort areas, environmental challenges like polluted rivers and unsorted waste piles reveal a different reality. Through activities such as waste sorting awareness surveys, on-site assessments, and visits to local businesses, students analyzed the current situation. They then devised actionable solutions, implemented them, and presented their findings in English to local companies, fostering meaningful impact.IndiaMalaysiaIndonesiaSri LankaAsian Service Learning ProgramAt Dalton Tokyo, Global Service Learning (GSL) offers a cultural and service immersion experience in communities across Asia. All Grade 10 students participate in this 8-day program during August and September, applying classroom knowledge and skills. Students select one of four destinations—India, Indonesia, Malaysia, or Sri Lanka—and engage in service learning by addressing local social issues. These trips encourage students to reflect on their lives, acquire new skills, and face unexpected challenges.
